Sanjay Awasthi, MD

Sanjay Awasthi, MD, is a board-certified medical oncologist with more than 40 years of experience. He earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX, and went on to an internship and then a residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Medical Center in Little Rock, AR. Dr. Awasthi returned to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center to complete his fellowship.

Dr. Awasthi has taught at various universities and is an accomplished researcher. In 2011, the Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope in Los Angeles recruited him to head its melanoma program and continue the National Institute of Health-funded research on cancer, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and obesity. His work has contributed to the molecular understanding of why cancers form and are resistant to chemotherapy. Over the past decade, Dr. Awasthi’s focus has been on melanoma, breast cancer, ovarian and rare hereditary cancers.

Dr. Chen previously served as the Chief Resident in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has authored more than 25 publications and two book chapters, and his work has received numerous accolades, including the Roentgen Resident/Fellow Research Award and the Carolina Care Excellence Award. Kimmerle “KC” Cohen, MD, FACS, is board-certified in general surgery and surgical critical care. An oncological and general surgeon, she has more than 20 years of experience in complex skin cancer surgery and treatment, complex gastrointestinal surgery, and laparoscopy and robotic surgery, with an interest in treating breast cancer, cutaneous, and GI malignancies. Dr. Cohen also provides complex, comprehensive skin cancer resection and reconstruction with nodal biopsies and dissections. She has also performed inguinal and ventral hernia repair, abdominal wall reconstruction, palliative cancer surgery, breast cancer surgery, and general surgery. Dr. Cohen served as a staff surgeon at Tampa General Hospital, specializing in surgical oncology with a focus on breast cancer and the management of high-risk patients. As the staff general surgeon at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, FL, she founded the hospital’s Complex Skin Cancer program.

Dr. Narendran later conducted research in hematologic malignancies and went on to become an assistant professor at Hofstra University School of Medicine in Hempstead, New York. Dr. Narendran also worked at Monter Cancer Center in North New Hyde Park, New York, focusing on hematologic malignancies such as leukemia and lymphoma, and a variety of benign blood disorders. Before joining the Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute, Dr. Narendran also practiced medicine in the Pacific Northwest, working primarily in cancers of the lung, and the head and neck.

Marshall Posner, MD, joins the TGH Cancer Institute | Cancer Center of South Florida (CCSF) from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, where he was a professor of medicine and medical director of the head and neck oncology program. His clinical practice will focus on cancers of the head and neck, thyroid, salivary glands, and skin.

Dr. Posner will serve as medical director of the Cancer Center Clinical Trial Office, providing local access to cutting-edge cancer trials. Dr. Posner has provided compassionate, personalized care to his patients and led practice-changing studies in chemotherapy and de-escalation treatment in HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer. He has published numerous peer-reviewed papers and has been principal investigator of grants in immunology and led multiple clinical trials. Dr. Posner’s research and clinical practice have most recently been aimed at immunotherapy and HPV oropharyngeal cancer.
